A Christmas Story

Most people love the holiday season because of all the beautiful, decorative Christmas displays in the stores, the christmas lights, the chance that it WILL snow on Christmas, and the general feeling of giving and love. And there is no better example of this love for Christmas than the classic Christmas tale, A Christmas Story. Originally, this movie was not a huge success. But over the past 10 or so years, its has become almost a Christmas cult-classic movie.

It’s a flashback on a man’s childhood Christmas one year. We see a blond haired-blue eyed Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) who desperately wants a bb gun for Christmas, but everyone’s response to his wish seems to be “You’ll shoot you’re eye out!!!” We also meet Ralphie’s family, who includes a caring mother, a typical no-nonsense father, and an annoying, but cute little brother. However, in this Christmas, nothing seems to go normal, or the way it should. This movie includes the “I TRIPLE dog dare you” tongue-stuck to the pole scene, and the infamous….leg lamp. The movie is hysterical because the family issues run in EVERY family, and this family just never seems to catch a break trying to make a perfect Christmas. It’s not goofy in a slapstick kind of way. It’s genuinely funny. You feel as if you were joining them for their Christmas, and you are just observing all the hilarity that ensues.

About 5-10 years ago, TBS started the tradition of showing this film 24 hours on Christmas Even through Christmas Day. So, if you’ve NEVER seen this film (and everyone should, despite your religion) do so. It really is a fantastic movie. Extremely funny, very well written, and you feel like despite all the craziness of family dynamics, Christmas is the one time of the year where its okay. This may be the perfect Christmas movie, if not the perfect movie.
